Every protein tub sold legally in India should carry an FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) license number. But many consumers — and even gym trainers — don't know what FSSAI actually guarantees, and where its protections end.

What FSSAI Is

FSSAI is India's central food regulatory body. It sets standards for food products, licenses manufacturers and importers, and oversees food safety across the supply chain.

For supplements, FSSAI requires:

• Manufacturing facilities to be licensed (14-digit license number)
• Labels to comply with FSSAI labelling regulations
• Certain heavy metal and contaminant limits to be met

How to Verify an FSSAI Number

A valid result will show the company name, address, and license validity. If the number returns no result: do not consume the product.

FSSAI does NOT:

In the USA, organizations like Informed Sport, NSF Certified for Sport, and USP verify that what's on the label matches what's in the product. In India, this ecosystem is not yet developed.

• Return/exchange policies are non-existent
