About whey concentrate
Whey protein concentrate is the least-processed form of whey and, for most people buying protein in India, the correct default. It is filtered once rather than twice, so it retains some lactose and milk fat, and typically runs 70–80% protein by weight. What it retains alongside those is worth noting: the milk fractions that survive concentration include immunoglobulins and lactoferrin, which the further filtering used to make isolate partly removes.
The case for concentrate is economic. At roughly ₹1,400–₹2,500 per kg it undercuts isolate substantially, and because muscle protein synthesis responds to the amino acids delivered rather than the purity of the powder they arrived in, a concentrate hitting your daily protein target does the same job. Unless you are lactose intolerant or in a strict cutting phase, the gap between a good concentrate and a good isolate is far smaller than the price gap.
This is also the category where Indian buyers get cheated most often, precisely because it is the volume segment. The two things to watch for are amino spiking — free-form glycine, taurine or BCAAs added to inflate the nitrogen-derived protein figure — and blends sold at single-source prices. Neither is visible on the front of the tub, and both are visible in the ingredient list.
A practical note on the numbers below: we rank on standardized nutrition data and cost per gram of protein, never on brand deals, and we do not accept payment for placement. Where a product looks unusually cheap per gram, check its purity percentage before assuming it is a bargain — that is usually where the catch is.
Buying guide
What to look for
- 1
Expect 70–80% purity, and be suspicious above it
A concentrate claiming 85%+ is either mislabelled, actually an isolate blend, or spiked.
- 2
Watch the added sugar line
Budget concentrates often carry 3–6g of added sugar per serving to mask the taste of cheap whey. That is calories you are paying protein prices for.
- 3
Check where the whey is sourced
Most Indian brands import whey powder and blend locally. Country of origin on the pack tells you more about consistency than the brand name does.
- 4
Prefer larger tubs only after checking per-gram cost
Bigger packs are usually but not always cheaper per gram of protein, and a 5 lb tub of a mediocre product is a long commitment.
- 5
Confirm the FSSAI licence number
It should be printed on the pack and resolve on the FSSAI portal. This is the single cheapest authenticity check available to you.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is whey concentrate good enough for building muscle?
Yes. Concentrate delivers the same amino acid profile as isolate; it simply arrives with more lactose and fat alongside it. If your total daily protein intake is adequate, the form makes very little difference to muscle gain.
What is a fair price for whey concentrate in India?
Roughly ₹1,400 to ₹2,500 per kg. Below about ₹1,200 per kg, check the purity percentage and ingredient list carefully — that price point is difficult to reach honestly.
Does whey concentrate cause bloating?
It can, because it retains lactose. If you get bloating or discomfort roughly thirty minutes after a shake, lactose is the likely cause and an isolate or a plant protein is the usual fix.
How do you tell a real concentrate from a spiked one?
Look at the ingredient list for free-form glycine, taurine, creatine or added BCAAs placed high in the order, and check that protein per scoop divided by scoop size lands in the 70–80% range. Both together are a strong signal.
