Protein bars solve a convenience problem rather than a nutrition one. Their honest use is a portable 15–25g of protein when a meal or a shake is not practical — a commute, a desk, a gym bag. Judged as food they are expensive per gram of protein, usually two to four times what the same protein costs as powder.

The number that separates a good bar from a confectionery product is added sugar. A well-made bar carries under 5g per serving and derives its sweetness from dates, sugar alcohols or stevia. Plenty of bars sold in the fitness aisle carry 12–18g, at which point they are chocolate bars with whey added. Total carbohydrate is less informative here than the added sugar line specifically, because date-based bars carry meaningful natural sugar without the same problem.

Protein density matters too. A good bar delivers 20g of protein in a 60g bar, roughly a third by weight. Bars that deliver 10g in a 60g bar are mostly carbohydrate and fat, and their calorie count usually reflects that — 300+ calories for 10g of protein is a snack, not a protein source.

A note specific to the Indian market: this category has grown quickly and label accuracy varies more than in powders. Check that the protein figure on the front matches the nutrition panel, and treat "high protein" claims on the wrapper as marketing until the panel confirms them.
