"Imported is better" is one of the most repeated pieces of gym advice in India. We checked it against the labels: 1,292 whey proteins made in India and 274 imported ones, compared on price per gram of protein and on how much of each scoop is actually protein.

The short version: imported whey is a little purer on average and about 10% more expensive per gram of protein — and the best value in either group is Indian-made.

Figures were taken from our catalogue on 29 September 2026, using the country of origin printed on each listing. Nutrition comes from each product's label as listed by the seller. We are a data platform, not a laboratory, and did not test these products ourselves — here is how we handle product data. We only counted products whose serving count, scoop size and pack weight agree.

What the Numbers Say

Imported whey is purer on average

Imported products are more consistent. More than half reach A tier, and almost none fall into C tier. Indian whey is spread much wider: the market includes some of the purest products we list and a long tail of budget blends where a large share of every scoop is carbohydrate. Eight percent of Indian wheys are under 60% protein; among imports it is 1.5%.

Indian whey is cheaper per gram of protein

The median Indian whey costs ₹362 per 100g of protein against ₹400 for imports — about 10% less. Import duty, freight and distribution are the usual reasons imported tubs cost more.

The best products are not where you would expect

All five A+ wheys in this data set are Indian. The purest-for-the-price example is Bigmuscles Nutrition Premium Gold Whey (1kg, ₹1,699): 25g of protein in a 27g scoop (93%) at ₹184 per 100g of protein. Fuel One Whey Iso-Max Unflavoured is another, at 91% and ₹334 per 100g.

The cheapest imported wheys per gram are big multi-kilo packs:

Imported productPackPurityCost / 100g protein
Ultimate Nutrition Prostar 100% Whey (USA)4.5 kg83%₹222
Myprotein Impact Whey (UK)2.5 kg84%₹271
SSN 100% Whey Protein (USA)2.3 kg80%₹283
QNT Prime Whey (Belgium)4 kg78%₹352

Those undercut the Indian median — but only if you are ready to buy 2.5 to 4.5 kg at once.

"Imported" Is Less Clear Than It Sounds

Country of origin is about where the tub was made, not which brand sold it. Several international brands sell India-made packs alongside imported ones — in our catalogue, some Optimum Nutrition listings give India as the country of origin and others the USA. Check the origin on the listing or the tub if it matters to you, rather than assuming from the brand name.

So Which Should You Buy?

  1. Judge the product, not the passport. Where it was made tells you less than the label does. Cost per 100g of protein and purity per scoop sort good whey from bad in either group.
  2. With an Indian brand, check purity carefully. The spread is wider, so read protein per scoop against scoop size. Under 60% and you are buying a lot of filler.
  3. With an imported brand, check the pack size. Imports are best value in big packs. In 1kg tubs, a comparable Indian product is usually cheaper.
  4. Check the listing for an FSSAI licence. Any whey sold in India, imported or not, needs one — why that matters. A blank field on our site means the listing did not show one, not that the product has none.
  5. Read the ingredient list either way. Amino acid padding shows up in both groups: how to spot amino spiking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is imported whey protein better than Indian whey?

Not by default. Across 1,566 whey proteins, imported ones are a little purer on average (76% vs 73% protein per scoop) but about 10% more expensive per gram of protein. The purest products we list — all five in our A+ tier — are Indian-made.

Why is imported whey protein more expensive in India?

Import duty, freight and distribution add to the price. That is why imported whey looks best value in large 2–4.5kg packs, where those fixed costs are spread over more protein.

How do I know if my whey protein is imported?

Check the country of origin on the tub or the product listing, and the importer's name and FSSAI licence number on the label. The brand name alone is not enough — some international brands sell India-made packs too.
